Every Epoch (not only) Dreams the Next / various media / 2025

The exhibition *Every Epoch (not only) Dreams the Next* revolves around historical and contemporary processes of transformation in the urban space of Tirana. The central piece in Johannes Gierlinger’s exhibition is his film *Every Epoch Dreams the Next*, which draws on an excerpt from the feature film *Qyteti më i ri në botë* (Xhanfise Keko, 1974; “The Youngest City in the World”). In a dreamlike scene, a boy dreams of a modern city. In Gierlinger’s work, the boy becomes a 3D computer-generated figure who hovers over old and new buildings and wanders through past and present utopias.

*Every Epoch (not only) Dreams the Next* consist of several works that explores dream as a space of agency and examines how cityscapes change under shifting political and social power structures. Historical film fragments, contemporary construction sites, graffiti, and found film strips come together to form a reflection on social transformation, democratic developments, and the accessibility of public space. At the same time, the works raise questions about the impact of current capitalist developments on urban spaces—in Tirana as well as beyond.
