Ein Traum, eine Stadt, ein Junge. Ausgangspunkt für den Film 'Every Epoch Dreams the Next' ist ein Ausschnitt aus dem Film Qyteti me i ri ne bote (Xhanfise Keko 1974, EN: „The Youngest City in the World“) aus der kommunistischen Ära in Albanien. In einer traumähnlichen Szene dieses Spielfilms träumt ein Junge von einer modernen Stadt, in der Fortschritt und Wandel durch Konstruktionen und Versiegelung dargestellt werden. 'Every Epoch Dreams the Next' kreist um die historischen und aktuellen Transformationsprozesse des urbanen Raums der albanischen Stadt Tirana und reflektiert die Macht der Bilder, vergangene und gegenwärtige Utopien und das Zusammenspiel mit Architektur. Der Film betrachtet den Traum als einen Handlungsraum, in dem historische und soziale Einschreibungen, Transformationen und Verbindungen zwischen verschiedenen Epochen und Systemen miteinander verschmelzen.'Every Epoch Dreams the Next' erforscht, wie ein Stadtbild sich durch wechselnde Machtstrukturen verändert und wie sich diese Machtstrukturen über das Gemeinwohl und die Allgemeinheit hinwegsetzen können. Eine Betrachtung über demokratische Entwicklungen, neue und alte Regime, Geldwäsche, Propaganda und die Zugänglichkeit des öffentlichen Raums.

 
A dream, a city, a boy. The starting point for the film 'Every Epoch Dreams the Next' is an excerpt from the film Qyteti me i ri ne bote (Xhanfise Keko 1974, EN: ‘The Youngest City in the World’) from the communist era in Albania. In a dream-like scene in this feature film, a boy dreams of a modern city in which progress and change are represented by buildings and constructions. 'Every Epoch Dreams the Next' revolves around the historical and current transformation processes of the urban space of the Albanian city of Tirana and reflects on the power of images, historical and contemporary utopias and the interplay with architecture. 'The film examines the dream as a space of action in which historical and social inscriptions, transformations and connections between different eras and systems merge with one another. 'Every Epoch Dreams the Next' explores how a cityscape changes as power structures shift and how these power structures can override the common good and the general public. A reflection on democratic developments, new and old regimes, money laundering, propaganda, and the accessibility of public space.

'Every Epoch Dreams the Next' positions itself in-between sleeping and dreaming, or in-between material archives and 3D renderings, creating a bridge between the utopia of the past and the abstract branches of the present. Gierlinger takes images from The Newest City in the World (1974, dir. Xhanfise Keko), a hidden gem of Albanian cinema, and bathes them into a digital concoction. The lullaby carried over throughout the film, a melodious kaleidoscope of unconsciousness, enhances the highly textured images of constructions from the past and clashes with the aseptic but vividly coloured surfaces of today’s immaterial. If the victorious austerity of bygone times allowed for dreaming, the present, so preoccupied with immersion, no longer makes room for this amnesiac luxury.
